Tropical Storm Narra Disrupted China-Thailand Rocket Launch

China’s ambitious lunar exploration program has encountered a delay, with the Chang’e 7 mission now rescheduled for 2027. The National Astronomical Research Institute of Thailand (NARIT) confirmed that Tropical Storm Narra, which formed in the South China Sea, disrupted the safety conditions required for the Long March 5 Y14 rocket launch originally planned for August 24, 2026. The decision to postpone was not taken lightly, but the risks posed by unstable weather patterns made it unavoidable.

The Chang’e 7 mission is designed to land near Shackleton Crater at the moon’s south pole, a region of immense scientific interest due to its potential reserves of ice hidden in shadowed areas. Successful landing requires precise alignment with sunlight angles to power solar panels, and the timing window for such conditions has now closed for 2026. This technical constraint, combined with the storm, pushed the mission into the following year.

Thailand’s contribution to the mission, the CE-7 MATCH (Moon-Aiming Thai-Chinese Hodoscope), remains fully prepared despite the delay. Developed through collaboration between NARIT and Mahidol University, the instrument represents years of Thai scientific and engineering effort. CE-7 MATCH is designed to measure cosmic rays and study the radiation environment in space, deepening understanding of the dynamic relationship between the Sun, Earth, and Moon. Importantly, the device does not rely on internal batteries, instead drawing energy from the orbiter’s solar system, making it resilient to extended storage.

Dr. Viphu Rujobkarn, Director of NARIT, emphasized that the postponement does not diminish the readiness or significance of CE-7 MATCH. He highlighted the broader value of the project: the knowledge gained, the experience accumulated, and the growth of Thai talent in space science. These outcomes, he noted, will remain with Thailand long after the mission itself, laying the foundation for future technological advances and more complex space endeavors.

Dr. Pirapong, Chief Equipment Development Engineer for CE-7 MATCH, underscored the team’s determination to continue pushing forward. While awaiting the new launch date, Thai researchers are advancing parallel projects such as CE-8 ALIGN and establishing a deep space engineering laboratory in Thailand. These initiatives aim to open opportunities for the next generation of scientists and engineers to participate in space exploration.
