Thai Tourism Plus Initiative Set to Drive 20 Billion Baht in Economic Activity

The Thai government is preparing to introduce the Thai Tourism Plus initiative to the Cabinet on September 22 with the expectation that it will generate more than 20 billion baht in economic activity. The program is designed to stimulate domestic travel during the final quarter of 2026 and the first quarter of 2027.

Citizens will be eligible for accommodation support capped at 2,000 baht per right, with any excess cost covered personally. In addition, coupons valued at 1,500 baht in major cities and 2,000 baht in secondary cities will be distributed. These coupons can be used not only for restaurants but also for spas, souvenir shops, massage services, and tourism packages such as diving or boat trips. The program will provide one million rights, with each citizen allowed to use up to five rights.

Registration will open in October, with privileges available from November until December 15, after which the program will pause for the New Year holiday and resume from January 16 to February 28. The government will fund the program with a 4,000 million baht loan. To prevent abuse, strict measures are being put in place.

Accommodation operators must provide documentation confirming last year’s prices to ensure that rates remain consistent. The Ministry of Finance has designed the system to discourage price inflation by using a flat rate structure. Tourist Police will monitor compliance, and operators found to be inflating prices will face consequences.

Anti-corruption measures are also being emphasized, with blacklisted individuals and businesses excluded from participation. Previous phases of similar programs saw around 1,000 people barred, and recent monitoring has shown a decline in fraudulent activity.

The timing of the program coincides with Thailand’s high season, making it a strategic move to maximize domestic tourism while ensuring fairness and transparency. The government believes that the flat rate design will neutralize attempts to exploit the system and maintain consumer confidence.

With the combination of financial support, regulatory oversight, and targeted incentives, the initiative aims to strengthen the tourism sector and drive economic momentum into the new year.
