Thailand’s Leap to the Future with Chinese Space Exploration Mission

Thailand is stepping onto the Moon’s next chapter by delivering a homegrown scientific payload, “CE-7 MATCH,” designed and developed by Thai experts for its first-ever participation in a lunar exploration mission. Selected to join the “Chang’e 7” (ฉางเอ๋อ 7) mission, the instrument will operate under the broader ILRS (International Lunar Research Station) plan, a flagship initiative aimed at building an international research station on the Moon. The payload is scheduled for launch from the Wenchang Space Launch Site in Hainan Province, the People’s Republic of China, on 24 August 2569 BE (2026) at 07:00 Thailand time.

The Moon remains a long-standing priority in humanity’s exploration of space. Beyond its symbolic significance, it has functioned as a powerful catalyst—driving major leaps in both science and technology. Today, the world is moving from observation toward preparation, laying the foundations for actual lunar presence and settlement. Thailand is positioning itself within this momentum through international cooperation and mission-aligned technological development.

Within this context, the “Thai–China Lunar Exploration Cooperation” framework, built around the international lunar research station concept, Thailand contributes through the development and design of a “scientific research instrument” known as CE7-MATCH. The instrument forms part of the country’s preparations for establishing a lunar research station, with the payload slated for launch in August. This participation is not simply a milestone for one mission; it is a strategic step that reflects Thailand’s growing role in high-level space research and engineering.

For CE-7 MATCH, the effort is structured as a multi-stakeholder collaboration led by Thailand’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation (อว.), executed through NARIT, the National Astronomical Research Institute (Public Organization), together with Mahidol University and relevant scientific entities in China. Collectively, the project stands as another pivotal advancement for Thailand’s scientific and space sector—reinforcing the nation’s ability to develop space technology, engineering systems, and frontier research competencies that meet international expectations.

Technically and conceptually, CE-7 MATCH (Moon Aiming Thai-Chinese Hodoscope) is designed around a set of scientific questions aligned with the mission goals of Chang’e 7. Following a selection process, it was chosen as one of seven international scientific instruments intended to be sent into lunar orbit. The instrument’s core responsibility is to detect and measure cosmic radiation, high-energy particles present in space while also studying the relationship among the Sun, Earth, and Moon. Through these observations, the mission aims to clarify the origin and quantity of radiation, as well as the mechanisms through which radiation forms, with potential implications for human well-being in the future.

Equally important, the data and insights derived from CE-7 MATCH are intended to establish a knowledge base that supports long-term space exploration and future lunar settlement. In other words, the instrument is not only gathering measurements for a single mission timeline, but contributing to the scientific infrastructure required for sustained lunar operations and human presence beyond Earth.
