Netflix names longtime director Jay Hoag as chairman, succeeding Reed Hastings

Netflix has appointed Jay Hoag, its longtime lead independent director, as chairman of the board, succeeding co-founder Reed Hastings. The announcement was made in an SEC filing following the company’s annual shareholders meeting on June 4, 2026. Hastings, who transformed Netflix from a DVD-by-mail service into a global streaming leader, stepped down to focus on philanthropy and other pursuits.

Hoag, co-founder of Technology Crossover Ventures (TCV)—a major early investor in Netflix—has served on the board since 1999 and held the role of lead independent director for over a decade. In addition to his new position at Netflix, he currently sits on the boards of Zillow Group and Peloton Interactive.
