Intuitive Machines has set its sights beyond lunar exploration by announcing the acquisition of Lanteris Space Systems, formerly known as Maxar Space Systems, for a hefty $800 million. Intuitive Machines, recognized primarily for its lunar infrastructure capabilities, is poised to become a formidable player in a multi-domain space market. CEO Steve Altemus emphasized this transition, stating, “This marks the moment Intuitive Machines transitions from a lunar company to a multi-domain space prime, setting the pace for how the industry’s next generation will operate.” This transformative acquisition reflects a vision of growth and diversification in an industry that is increasingly influenced by military and national security considerations.

Historically, Intuitive Machines has primarily engaged in contracts with NASA and other commercial lunar exploration projects. However, recent developments indicate a growing interest in the military space domain. The company was awarded a significant contract in 2023 from the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) as part of the Joint Emergent Technology Supplying On-orbit Nuclear Power (JETSON) program. This $9.5 million award aimed to advance technologies associated with on-board satellite nuclear fission reactors, underscoring the company’s commitment to developing innovative energy solutions for extended space missions.

On October 22, the firm announced a follow-on contract worth $8.2 million under the same JETSON program, reinforcing its role in pioneering space technologies that could power critical spacecraft subsystems, such as sensors and communication payloads.

Following its rebranding on October 1 by private equity firm Advent International, Lanteris has laid out a roadmap prioritizing business opportunities in defense technology. Notably, it was selected by L3Harris as a subcontractor for building missile tracking satellites, further highlighting its strategic importance in defense contracts.

The anticipated closure of this acquisition in the first quarter of 2026, pending regulatory approvals, could serve as a turning point for Intuitive Machines.
