Promoting Inclusion in Workplaces: 4 Strategies for Change

Every worker has the right to a quality working environment, regardless of their abilities. Unfortunately, workers with disabilities often face significant challenges in traditional workplaces.

To help promote inclusion in workplaces, managers must first acknowledge the unique needs of their workers and work to create an environment that supports diverse groups. Here are four strategies for change:

  1. Provide Individualized Support: Every worker works differently, and managers must be prepared to provide individualized support to ensure that all workers are able to contribute and thrive. This may include modifications to existing work arrangements, additional resources or accommodations, and collaboration with other managers and specialists.
  2. Promote a Culture of Acceptance: Workplaces must work to promote a culture of acceptance and inclusivity by fostering an environment where differences are celebrated and respected. This can be achieved through various means, including diversity training for staff and associates, the use of inclusive language and working materials, and the inclusion of workers with disabilities in physical activities.
  3. Create Physical Access: Workplaces must also ensure that their physical spaces are accessible to all workers, regardless of their abilities. This may include modifications to workplaces, hallways, and restrooms, as well as the provision of assistive technology and other resources.
  4. Encourage Family Involvement: Finally, workplaces must actively seek to involve families in the education process and partner with them to support their worker’s work contributions and development. This may include regular communication and collaboration on individualized development plans.

By implementing these strategies, workplaces can begin to promote inclusion and create a supportive work environment for diverse groups of workers.
